As Alaska’s largest source of renewable energy, hydropower supplies more than 20 percent of the state’s electrical energy in an average water year. There are nearly fifty operating utility-scale hydroelectric projects in Alaska. The majority of Alaska’s existing hydro projects are located in the southeast and southcentral regions of Alaska.
Alaska is also a marine energy hotspot. The U.S. National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) estimates that Alaska holds 95% of the total U.S. tidal resource – the equivalent amount of energy to power 20 million homes. There are ongoing projects in Alaska to harness the state’s vast tidal energy potential.

Hydro Plant Tour Opportunity

The Alaska Electric Light & Power Co. (AEL&P) is offering a tour of the 1.6-MW Gold Creek hydroelectric plant, a small run of the river plant right in the heart of Juneau.
It houses two 400 kW four-jet horizontal impulse turbines installed in 1906 and one 800 kW six-jet vertical impulse turbine installed in 1950. The hydroelectric plant produces 1-2% of Juneau’s gross power generation annually.
The Gold Creek plant also houses 5 diesel units ranging in capacity from 1 MW to 3.5 MW, installed between 1951 and 1966. While these units used to be an integral part of our generation fleet, they are now typically only run annually for testing. When diesel backup is required, AEL&P now primarily uses the newer, more efficient units in our system.
You will have the opportunity to RSVP for this tour when you register for the event.
If you need to change your RSVP for the tour, please reach out to Ellie Rubalow at Ellie@hydro.org
