A tank trailer can collapse due to a phenomenon called vacuum collapse. This occurs when there is a significant pressure difference between the inside and outside of the tank, causing the tank walls to implode. There are a few scenarios that can lead to vacuum collapse in a tank trailer: 1. Pumping out the contents too quickly: If the contents of the tank are being pumped out rapidly, it can create a rapid decrease in pressure inside the tank. This sudden drop in pressure can cause the tank walls to collapse inward. 2. Heat-induced pressure drop: Some substances expand when heated, creating pressure inside the tank. If the tank is exposed to extreme heat and then quickly cooled, a rapid pressure drop can occur, potentially leading to vacuum collapse. 3. Failure in tank components: If there is a malfunction or failure in the tank's components, such as a broken valve or a damaged pressure relief device, it can create an imbalance in pressure and ultimately lead to vacuum collapse. To prevent vacuum collapse, tank trailers are usually designed with reinforcements, such as stiffening rings or support beams, to withstand the external pressure and prevent collapse.
