This week, President Trump was asked about the current version of “The One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” which advanced to the Senate last week, to which he replied, “We will be negotiating that bill, and I’m not happy about certain aspects of it…”
He’s not the only one.
Hydropower, which was identified as a key component in the Administration’s ‘Energy Dominance’ agenda, has been mentioned in multiple Trump Executive Orders; yet, hydro was neglected in the House’s budget bill despite the President’s vocal support.
As it stands, the current bill ignores the long development process for hydro, creating timing windows for tax credit access that serve as a direct obstruction to the type of baseload energy development the U.S. sorely needs and claims to want.
On May 23, President Trump released four Executive Orders designed to ease and expand the production of nuclear energy in the U.S., with a specific focus on speeding up the review and regulatory process – core pillars of the hydro industry’s demands, as the energy technology’s potential has been deeply hampered by long review times and a complex regulatory process.
Yet, in all of the conversation about nuclear, the significance and connection with hydropower has been forgotten. It’s not a coincidence that the location of many of the nation’s pumped-storage hydro assets, representing 96% of all U.S. long duration energy storage, are neighbors to nuclear facilities. Many PSH facilities were constructed to offload excess energy generated by nuclear plants, and to neglect the interplay between these two energy technologies denies our nation of the opportunity to truly utilize these critical assets.
