President and CEO at National Hydropower Association

This ain’t your grandfather’s water power industry. That was my main message at NASEO - National Association of State Energy Officials’s 2024 Energy Policy Outlook Conference in Washington D.C. The hydropower industry honors our legacy, but we’re not stuck in the past. Our industry is constantly innovating and adapting to challenges like extreme weather brought on by #climatechange, as well as the growing need for energy storage. We’re responding by supporting emerging technologies like marine energy, bringing diverse stakeholders together through the Uncommon Dialogue, fighting for parity with other zero-carbon technologies in federal and state laws, and much more. It’s long past time for our leaders to recognize these opportunities and support policies that help – not hinder – hydro’s ability to answer America’s energy needs. So, next time you speak with your state's energy office, ask them if they’re giving water power the attention it deserves. Thank you to moderator Kristoff Anderson from the Georgia Environmental Finance Authority and to fellow panelists Chip Little of Colonial Pipeline Company and Thomas Bartholomew of the DC Department of Energy and Environment.

Yes! I like to say the same thing (not your grandparent’s hydro)! We can continue to be proud of our history, but need to increase awareness of the innovations happening in hydro. We’re not just part of the past, we’re the foundation of the future. Important for policy makers and also recruitment efforts.
