NHA Statement on Chris Wright’s Nomination to Lead Department of Energy

Washington, DC — NHA released the following statement in response to the news that President Trump has tapped energy executive, Chris Wright, to lead the Department of Energy:

NHA congratulates Chris Wright on his nomination to serve as U.S. Secretary of Energy in the incoming Trump Administration. We look forward to a continued partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to strengthen America’s energy dominance and continue to ensure a 24/7 reliable electricity grid.

The Trump Administration will be taking the reins at a critical point for the water power industry, as roughly 40% of the non-federal hydropower fleet is at risk of premature retirement. Facilities generating nearly 16,000 MWs of firm and clean electricity capacity will have their licenses expire in the next decade. The Trump Administration should prioritize preserving and expanding the existing hydropower fleet by encouraging dam safety and environmental upgrades and streamlining the antiquated re-licensing process. Marine energy technologies, such as current, wave and tidal, also show great potential to enhance America’s energy independence.

For over 140 years, water power has helped fuel America’s economic prosperity. NHA is excited to work with Secretary-designee Wright and the new Congress to preserve and grow this vital domestic resource for generations to come.
