Green future with clean energy – Papua New Guinea's Hydropower potential The Government of Papua New Guinea, the largest country in the Pacific region, aims to provide electricity to 70% of its population, from the current, 13% by 2030. The abundant hydropower potential in the country, if it can be effectively developed as a source of renewable energy, will be a huge achievement in meeting this goal in a sustainable and environment friendly manner, and will contribute to Papua New Guinea’s commitment to the United Nations’ SDG7, which is to ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all. The Warren Centre presents an overview of Papua New Guinea’s potential, policy and plans for hydropower development, along with some details of specific projects that have been identified for implementation as priorities including mini-hydro schemes.
