March 4-6, 2008 - Washington International Renewable Energy Conference (WIREC)
The Washington International Renewable Energy Conference provided an excellent opportunity for the hydropower industry to educate attendees about new developments and technologies within the industry. Through three side events, professionals within the hydropower industry examined the status of new hydropower technologies as well as markets and policy drivers in both an international and U.S. context.

Hydro/Ocean: US Markets & Policy Drivers
This session explored the current and future role played by hydropower technologies in the U.S. The panelists' presentations are available to view below.

Chair: Linda Church Ciocci, National Hydropower Association
David Youlen, Brookfield Power, "Challenges to Conventional Hydropower Development in the U.S."
Wayne Krouse, Hydro Green Energy LLC, "Instream Hydrokinetic Energy"
Timothy Oakes, Kleinschmidt Associates, "Expansion of the Holtwood Hydroelectric Project"
Kevin Banister, Finavera Renewables, "Wave Energy"
Burt Hamner, Puget Sound Tidal Power LLC, "Tidal and River Hydrokinetic Power Generation"

Hydro/Ocean: Status of Technology
This session reviewed hydro and ocean power technologies including advanced hydro turbines, wave power, tidal power and kinetic power.

Chair: Thomas Key, Electric Power Research Institute
Alejandro Moreno, U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), "U.S. DOE Water Power Activities"
Jason Foust, Voith Siemens Hydro Power Generation, "Dissolved Oxygen in Hydro Power Plants"
Michael Sale, Sentech, Inc., "Environmental Optimization in Conventional Hydropower"
Peter Fraenkel, Marine Current Turbines Limited, "Pioneering Tidal Stream Technology"
Jason Bak, Finavera Renewables , "AquaBuOY"
Stein Erik Skilhagen, Star Kraft, AS, "Osmotic Power, A New Renewable Energy Source"

Hydro/Ocean: Global Markets & Policy Drivers
This session examined the current and future role of hydropower and ocean technologies from a global perspective.
